Abstract:The Yangtizishan metamorphosed sedimentary titanium deposit in Inner Mongolia be longs to a new genetic type. This deposit was formerly referred to as an iron de posit. Based on field and indoor investigation, the authors hold that it is a me tamorphosed sedimentary titanium deposit. The ore bodies occur in Lower Proteroz oic Erdaowa Group consisting of sericite_quartz schist in the stratoid and lenti cular forms. The ores have perthitic structure comprising chiefly interbedded qu artz perthite and ilmenite (±rutile) perthite. The ore minerals are mainly ilme nite and rutile and, subordinately, hematite and limonite, while the nonmetallic minerals are chiefly quartz with small amounts of biotite, amphibole (grunerite ) and garnet (spessartine_almandine). The ores contain 2.90%~18.14% TiO2, 8.0 4%~23.6% TFe, with very low P and S content. In the course of investigation, th e northern Moshishan rutile_dominated rich ore body was discovered by the author s. The genetic model of this deposit is as follows: (1) It was formed in a small oceanic basin under a oxygen_deficient (highly reducing) condition in Early Pro terozoic; (2) The ores precipitated in a minimum depth of below 200 m of sea wat er, being products of purely chemical precipitation; (3) The source of the major components of the titanium ore such as Si, Ti, Fe, and Mn seems to be hydrother mal or exhalative in the deep ocean basin; (4) The ore deposit has suffered regi onal metamorphism of intermediate degree; (5) In Mesozoic, the deposit was local ly subjected to reformation by granitic intrusion. This type of titanium ore deposit has never been reported in literature and is t herefore the first documented occurrence in the world. |
