Abstract:The Honquan bentonite deposit, a deposit of sedimentary type, occurs in a Carboniferous-Permian faulted basin in the southern margin of the Alshan Platform. The ore-bearing strata are Permian terrestrial sediments composed of Sandstone, siltstone and mudstone intercalated with tuffaceous sandstone and tuffaceous siltstone. The ore deposit is made up of 12 ore beds. In mineral constituents, the ore consists mainly of montmorillonite(40-90%), with less amounts of kaolin, quartz, feldspar, hydromica, chlorite and volcanic materials(totaling 10—6 0%). Chemical analysis, differential thermal analysis,X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared absorption spectroscopy and electronic microscopy all indicate that the Hongquan bentonite deposit is of Wyoming type. The Hongquan bentonite is demonstrated to be of magnesium, sodium or transitional characters at the surface, and of calcium character 30-460 m below the surface;its natural shape has been proved to be closely related to the sodium-magnesium-alkaline underground water with pH value of 8-9.The Hongquan bentonite has found wide applications in industry.
